Farmers protest against tomato import, plowed ready crop
When the government did not stop the import of tomatoes, the price of local tomatoes in Hyderabad remained at a paltry price and the growers became discouraged and plowed their ready crop.
According to the Sindh Resettlement Board, the federal government was informed about the current situation in a letter and a half a month ago but the government did not stop the import process.
Due to non-stopping of imports, the rates of local tomatoes have come down drastically and tomatoes are still being bought from growers at Rs. 11 to 15 per kg and it is likely to go down further to Rs. The cost of the crop will not be met.
Encouraged by this situation, the settlers have started plowing their tomato crops in protest.
