Seizure of smuggled goods worth Rs 35 billion in 7 months

ISLAMABAD: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has seized a total of Rs 35 billion worth of smuggled goods during the first seven months of the current financial year (July-January).

According to a statement issued by the Federal Board of Revenue, keeping in view the vision of the Prime Minister, Pakistan Customs and FBR have taken significant steps to eradicate the menace of smuggling which has yielded encouraging results and boosted the local economy. And a conducive environment has been created for the growth of the industry.

Smuggled goods worth Rs 35 billion have been seized with an increase of 59 per cent from July to January this financial year as against Rs 22 billion smuggled in July-January last year. Thus, in the first seven months of the current financial year, the value of FBR anti-trafficking operations and confiscated items has increased to Rs. 36 billion from 12 months last year.

According to the FBR, the number of items seized during the current financial year increased by 66 per cent to Rs 11.3 billion without customs clearance vehicles, an increase of 105 per cent to Rs 3.4 billion, and clothing by Rs 1.9 billion with an increase of 28 per cent. Cigarettes worth Rs 553 million with an increase of 70%, auto parts worth Rs 492 million with an increase of 113%, electronic items worth Rs 380 million with an increase of 67%, diesel of Rs 899 million with an increase of 93% and an increase of 104%. Includes jewelery worth Rs 271 million.

In the current financial year, large quantities of liquor, valuable drugs and large quantities of drugs have also been seized. In addition, Pakistan Customs has also seized 60 tonnes of iodine which is used in the manufacture of illicit drugs. The operation has also been praised by international agencies.

In addition, as a result of effective operations against illegal petrol pumps, 2,000 illegal petrol pumps were sealed and disciplinary action was initiated against those responsible. These measures provided a favorable environment for the local industry to grow its business. Due to which the country’s economy is growing.
