The number of active taxpayers decreased by 30%
ISLAMABAD: The number of active taxpayers in the country has declined by 30 percent.
The number of active taxpayers has dropped to about 2.2 million. Yesterday, the Federal Board of Revenue released the list of active taxpayers for 2021, according to which the number of active taxpayers has decreased by 935,000. The 2.2 million active taxpayers are one-third of those with a National Tax Number (NTN) who do business in Pakistan but do not file tax returns. That is, two out of every three individuals and companies doing business in Pakistan and having NTN do not file tax returns.
This shows the FBR’s failure to enforce the law. The list for the tax year 2021 includes the names of 21.78 lakh active taxpayers. The number of active taxpayers in the list released last tax year was 31.2 lakh. Under tax laws, individuals and companies that are not on the list of active taxpayers are required to pay double tax on business transactions and other business activities.
Worryingly, people are willing to pay 100% more taxes but they are not willing to be part of the tax system. FBR spokesman Syed Nadeem Rizvi said that 500,000 people who filed tax returns last year did not file taxes this year. He said that another 500,000 people filed their tax returns after the due date but did not pay the penalty due to which their names could not be included in the list of active taxpayers. According to an FBR spokesman, 75,000 new taxpayers have emerged this year.
